Hi everybody ! The problem was solved thanks to an ideea given to me by David Harrington (Thanks David). I just modified the OBP variable boot-file from the from the default empty field to "/platform/sun4u/kernel/unix" . Now works O.K. I still think there is a problem in firmware, which was not solved by the upgrade to the latest firmware level available. But since there is this workaround available, I'm not too concerned about. George; This is an old problem. Look in the archives Jan thru May, and I think you'll find the permanent way around the problem. I had that problem when I first took over this job, and there is a patch which fixes it. The short term (quick) fix is as you show: boot: cannot open kernel/unix Enter filename [kernel/unix]: /platform/sun4u/kernel/unix [enter] Not a good solution with a critical machine! -----Original Message----- From: george.done@dutchtone.nl [ <mailto:george.done@dutchtone.nl>] Sent: Friday, September 28, 2001 12:59 To: sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org Subject: Netra 1405 booting problem Hi everybody ! I have a Netra 1405 (same motherboard as Ultra80 and Sun E420R). I boot the sistem from the first internal disk (c0t0d0). However, every time I try to boot or reboot it, the machine stops and say "cannot open kernel/unix". I found a little trick, I press enter few times, then I press / and Enter once and then again I type kernel/unix and press Enter twice and the machine boots. I did not played with OBP variables and is the only one who do this. I was thinking is an outdated firmware and I upgraded OBP to a version from July 2001 (before it was a firmware version from dec 1999). Nothing changed. The machine is new and always did this. I noticed is not a timing issue (for example I allowed plenty of time to internal disks to get started and still do not boot unless I do that trick typing / and then kernel/unix. It runs solaris 2.6 (latest Hw edition) and all relevant patches are installed. 4x440MHz CPU's The internal disk is SCSI 36 GB (Sun Original) I'm out of ideeas, please help !!
