Hmmm... turns out this is related to a known bug in the /usr/proc/bin programs. I had happened to be running pfiles on this process through cron to watch the number of files open. Another SA here just happened to have been bitten by this several months ago and he told me about his experience. Nothing can describe this better than the bug report though, so check it out.
