Thanks to the many replies, but the problem seems to be a bad CD-ROM drive (see original question below). Among the suggested solutions I tried were: - stopping / restarting vold - checking for any processes attempting to access CD - check for bad/music/non-data CD in drive Sun is sending a replacement drive; now I just need to find a time when I will be able to swap it.... The light on the drive is flashing continuously, but there is no cd in the drive. I've had this happen once before on a different box, and a reboot fixed it; however this machine is a 24x7 box and cannot be rebooted. Does anyone have any ideas that I can try?
