I have received several suggestions. * Mount the file systems with bg, soft, and intr * Use automount, instead of vfstab * Set up a mirrored NFS server * set "retries=3" or some other low value, because default is 10k. There seems to be a consensus that mounting r/w file systems as "soft" is a bad idea, due to the possibility of data corruption.
