Hello, all, Thanks for all responses. The solution is: When installing Solaris 7 or Solaris 8 and your DNS name server is outside your local network (quite a common situation), then you must not specify "DNS" as naming service: the installation software does not ask for the default router and does not set up routing - consequently the installation program will get stuck when trying to contact the DNS name server! If you are using DNS as naming service (as opposed to NIS or NIS+), specify "None" when asked about the type of naming service. After the installation, set up /etc/defaultrouter, /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nsswitch.conf manually. Thomas Knox <knoxth@cch.com> gave the right anwser: Ignore the "No carrier" error, it's harmless. The network issue you're experiencing is that your DNS server is on a different subnet than your ss5, and therefore the install can't find it. Choose networked and choose no name resolution, and you should be good to go. Thanks! ORIGINAL QUESTION: > Hello, all, > I try to install sol8 on ss5.
