SUMMARY: Fixing a screwed up xterm

As I suspected, the solution was embarrassingly simple:
<CRTL>-<Middle Click> and choose 'hardreset'

Stephen Forbes came up with the simple command: "tput sgr 0"

Many others suggested "echo <CTRL>v<CTRL>o"
