Many thanks, the dingbat prize goes to me and the real prize goes to Brooke 
King.  Yes, Brooke.... someone had loaded the root partition on slice 1 and 
swap was slice 0......... I looked at the format partition table and 
scanned right through it in my hurry....... Solaris 8 does this at default 
now I think too.  I do them by scratch.  This was an issue here in the list 
a few weeks ago too!
