Greetings All, Well, it's been 48 hours since I posted this so I'll go ahead with= my summary. I've got to admit that I'm a little disappointed that I only received 2 responses to this post, and one of those was correcting my spelling (first typo I've ever made in my life ;-)! Anyway, thanks to = Don Hoover and Noel Hunt for taking the time to reply. I've included my po= st and their replies at the end of this e-mail. I'm still interested in performance tool web sites, if anyone knows of some good ones... BTW, here's 2 good sites that I'm already aware of: 1) Sun's resi= dent performance guru, Adrian Cockcroft, maintains a page at www.sun.com/sun-on-net/performance. 2) There's also an excellent (exce= pt it doesn't have much info on gigabit ethernet) page on TCP tuning at www.sean.de/Solaris/tune.html maintained by Jens-S. Vockler. Thanks again, everyone... Kevin Buterbaugh LifeWay "Are you XPerienced? I am, that's why I don't use Micro$oft products..= ." ---------------------- Forwarded by Kevin Buterbaugh/Nashville/BSSBNOTE= S on 06/13/2001 03:49 PM --------------------------- Sent by: sunmanagers-admin@sunmanagers.org To: sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org cc: Subject: Performance benchmarking tools Greetings Again All, I just posted a summary to my gigabit ethernet performance problem= s. The bottom line was that I wasn't using the right tool for the job, des= pite the fact that I had used three different tools to attempt to test the performance of our gigabit ethernet network. Now, as anyone who's done any performance benchmarking knows, you should never use just one tool when doing performance benchmarking. Th= e vendors know this; that's why they try several different benchmarks and= then use the one that gives the best results in their advertisements! = ;-) This whole experience with benchmarking gigabit ethernet has left = me with a nagging question: how does one ensure that they're using the appropriate tool(s) for the job? rcp and ftp had proved fine for testi= ng fast ethernet. Consequently, I wasn't even aware of ttcp. Does anyone= have any recommendations on any web sites, magazine articles, books, et= c. concerning performance benchmarking tools? I'd prefer web sites, especially if they provide the ability to download the various tools. Thanks once again. I think that the number of people who responde= d to my previous post shows yet again what a valuable resource this list is.= Of course, I'll summarize...
