. in sh or source in csh run a script in "inline" mode so that it has the effect that you copy and pasted the entire script into your current shell. This works great for sh OR csh, but not both. The concensus seems to be that if the script executes in both "yay" if not "you're going to need to port it to the other shell", so while it is an answer to my question, its not the one that I was hoping for.
