I want to say thanks to everyone that responded so quickly. Many commented that I should upgrade to a newer version that the version of Solaris sendmail is crap. I already knew about the other sendmails, but because I'm relatively new at Unix stuff I thought it might cause more trouble for me. The bottom line is I'm running Version 8.8.8 but the config that Solaris provides is very old. I think I will plan to download the latest version from sendmail.org (since I just bought the book) and start from scratch. Apparently Solaris sendmail is very poor and with the help of this list I'm sure I can make it through. Thanks again to everyone, individual replies are below. It doesnt matter as long as your sendmail binary can interpret it. Your sendmail version comes from what the binary is and not the .cf file. So beleive what u r getting on the telnet....:) Hindley Nick The version is reported by the sendmail string is your version. The sendmail people have tried hard to ensure that older config files are still capable of being read to enable people to upgrade their sendmail binaries wothout having to change their sendmail.cf Mario Henley Becerril Geldis you are running 8.8.8 .... your version is set by binary sendmail, /usr/lib/sendmail....y not sendmail.cf sorry for my bad english..(Mario you english is fine, trust me you are much better an I would be if the tables were reversed Thanks you for your help) salu2 from Mexico... Alex Dreyer In the file /etc/mail/sendmail.cf is the statement of the version. The default Solaris 2.6 install uses the V7/Sun format. This indicates you are using Version 8 of sendmail in a standard 2.6 install. Funky, but true. The statement in the sendmail.cf file is one count off by default. Neill Sendmail version "8.8.8+Sun" with a sendmail version "SMI-SVR4" version config file. Ahmed You are most likely running version 8. But someone had upgraded sendmail from version 7 and at that time sendmail.cf wasnt updated properly. Just my 2cents. Thanks, Nabeel JIM BLEVINS /usr/lib/sendmail -bt -d0.1 < /dev/null will tell you the version and some other goodies. -jim Eric Paul You are running Sendmail 8.8.8, which you really should upgrade, as it has a number of MAJOR security holes. Sendmail will read earlier config files, and depending on how old the file is, may work or may not. Either pull down the latest stable version from sendmail.org or switch over to qmail. I switched all my mailservers over to qmail 6 months ago, and have been SO happy! Administration is a dream, and no more pesky upgrading once a month (at least) because a new security hole was found. Check out qmail.org and lifewithqmail.org if you are interested in switching things over. HTH. Don't forget to summarize! Jay Lessert To be precise, you're running a sendmail executable that thinks it is "8.8.8" + a sendmail.cf that says "DZSun/SMI-SVR4". For sure, the Sun-supplied "main.cf" and "subsidiary.cf" junk had "OQ" in them through 5.6. As of 5.8, they say, "O QueueDirectory", but the files themselves are still junk. :-) Max Trummer not that it's an answer to your question, but if i were you i'd go get the latest version from sendmail.org. sun's sendmail has a less-than-savory reputation. fwiw, i just built version 8.11.3 (ok, a couple of months ago) and it came up easily ( not first time, but not a struggle ). security and anti-spam features are much better. Chris Cariffe www.sendmail.org download and build the latest. it will be much more secure and up to date than sun's. your config file will be /etc/mail/sendmail.cf and the new binary will be /usr/lib/sendmail build the config from your sendmail-8.11.X/cf/cf directory then put it in /etc/mail Rick McKinney because the 8.8.8+Sun actually still uses the old 8.7 stuff it is a pain in the ass ... I have compiled the new version 8.11.4 ( and run it ) but you can get 8.9.1 from http://www.sunfreeware.com what type of system is this running on ... Bara Zani to find sendmail version : /usr/lib/sendmail -d0.1 -bt < /dev/null will print the version and compiled otions ===== Kathy Ange Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services Information Systems (804) 786-1340 Voice Mail (804) 786-2110 FAX __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
