A:

i commented out the S69inet script and rebooted.
however, the system refused to allow a login attempt.
so when i entered a valid userid, it just flipped me
the login prompt again and again.

this problem was ultimately resolved by restoring the
permissions to installed packages in the / filesystem
via the pkgchk command.

still don't know exactly what file/directory
permissions caused this, but it sure was a great
problem maker.
