However, Solaris does not bundle in any NAT feature like Linux does. Thanks to Koos van den Hout for giving me reply. i'm looking into any 3rd party sw capable of doing NAT on Solaris. Alternatively, i'm also looking into SunScreen (Sun firewall sw) in order to make use of the NAT feature for this purpose. Thanks a lot. -- Regards, Derrick Lim bklim@csa.com.my --------------5A1493DC13816A6FB9120129 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Received: from mail.cs.uu.nl (sunset.cs.uu.nl [131.211.80.32]) by csapg.csa.com.my (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id QAA07846 for <bklim@csa.com.my>; Wed, 1 Aug 2001 16:28:52 +0800 (SGT) Received: from piratella.cs.uu.nl (piratella.cs.uu.nl [131.211.80.72]) by mail.cs.uu.nl (Postfix) with SMTP id 40B0A451A for <bklim@csa.com.my>; Wed, 1 Aug 2001 10:17:38 +0200 (MET DST) Received: by piratella.cs.uu.nl (sSMTP sendmail emulation); Wed, 1 Aug 2001 10:17:38 +0200 Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 10:17:38 +0200 From: Koos van den Hout <koos@cs.uu.nl> To: Derrick Lim <bklim@csa.com.my> Subject: Re: PPP gateway on Solaris 8 Message-ID: <20010801101737.A10240@cs.uu.nl> References: <3B60E19F.DE3DCCA@csa.com.my> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i In-Reply-To: <3B60E19F.DE3DCCA@csa.com.my>; from bklim@csa.com.my on Fri, Jul 27, 2001 at 11:36:00AM +0800 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-md5; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="zYM0uCDKw75PZbzx" X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 --zYM0uCDKw75PZbzx Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Fri, Jul 27, 2001 at 11:36:00AM +0800, Derrick Lim wrote: > to be as the gateway for the rest in the LAN. You'll need to setup NAT (network address translation) on the Solaris that does the dialout to translate between the 192.168.1.x internal addresses and the 'real' addresses on the Internet out there. Standard Solaris does not support this at all. Your best bet, if you want to keep using that Solaris box as 'router' is to find and install ipfw (ip firewall) which can be a statefull firewall and do network address translation. I'd say this is not for the faint of heart, especially since ipfw needs a 64 bit compiler. You might consider using an old (recycled) PC with Linux as dialout/ mail machine. Dialout/nat (masquerading in Linux lingo) is much better supported in Linux. But I say "consider" since this is a different learning curve from Solaris and you may not be very interested in Yet Another Unix to learn. Good luck!
