C compiler for Solaris on i386 architecture

Can somebody confirm if this info belong to the C Compiler bundled with
Solaris 8?

pkginfo -l SUNWlibC
 PKGINST: SUNWlibC
NAME: Sun Workshop Compilers Bundled libC
CATEGORY: system
    ARCH: i386
 VERSION: 5.8,REV=99.06.09
 BASEDIR: /
  VENDOR: Sun Microsystems, Inc.
DESC: Sun Workshop Compilers Bundled libC
  PSTAMP: tron2m12212002
INSTDATE: Aug 14 2001 09:06
HOTLINE: Please contact your local service provider
  STATUS: completely installed
   FILES: 8 installed pathnames
               3 shared pathnames
               3 directories
               3 executables
             964 blocks used (approx)

If this is it, where I find the instructions on how to set it up?

When I try to use it from the command line get this message:

$ cc
/usr/ucb/cc: language optional software package not installed

On the other side, the man pages for cc talk about SPROcc.

Appreciate it if somebody can shed some light in this.

Pepe

Hi,

I have maken a mistaken in modifying root's shell
path. The SUN server has no CD-ROM and there is
no booting server in local network. So I'd like to get
an hacker program to get root right shell from a
regular user.
If I have root's privilege, I could modify file
/etc/passwd.

Your PROMPT help will be highly appreciated.

Subject: Binary corruption
Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 10:51:10 +0100

Managers, I was wondering if anyone out there had seen this before....

We have a server which we create and store all our 'home made' solaris
packages.
The box is a Sun Ultra10 running 2.6 (patched to 105181-26) and has two ide
disks, one 8 Gb and one 4Gb.

The behaviour we sometimes see is that when a package held in a file system
on disk0 is copied (or moved) to a file system on disk1 the binary (package)
becomes corrupted.

To elaborate:

section of df -k output:

/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s6	6000000	4000000	2000000	66%	/export/home/
/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s3	3000000	1000000	2000000	33%
/export/home/development/packages

If 'test' is a package I have created and is know to be working correctly
and I do:

cp /export/home/test /export/home/development/packages/test

then:

diff /export/home/test /export/home/development/packages/test
I get the following message:

Binary files /export/home/test and /export/home/development/packages/test
differ

..and the package /export/home/development/packages/test no longer functions
correctly when installed.

Now this is the strange part.
If I copy to /tmp (or /var or any other file system on disk0) the binaries
are the same and no corruption is observed.
Not all packages differ when copied to disk1 - it is more common for large
packages (>200Mb) to become corrupted, although small (10Mb) packages have
also been effected in the past.

This has been going on for a few months and we've trawled the internet
looking for something similar without any luck.
The best lead we got was possible a bad block on the disk itself which we
occasionally write to that could explain the sporadic behaviour?
However, the disk where we are seeing the corruption has been analysed and
no errors were seen.

Any pointers to where we could start looking appreciated.

Cheers
Chris

Managers.

We are having a problem with one of our T3 arrays that is connected to an
E450 running Sol2.6.

Occasionally, the T3 will experience the odd SCSI timeout, followed by the
array utilization shooting up to 100%, with a Q length of anything between
50 and 300. The E450 still functions normally, but with no access to the
array. We can telnet to the array normally and everything looks fine. We
can't kill off any jobs on the 450 so our only fix at this stage is a
reboot.

Has anyone else seen these symptoms.

We also have 5 other T3's and they are all at the same firmare level and
they are all running perfectly.

TIA. Sean.

Hello Jonathan,

the answer's easy: It can! But, as you perhaps know, the E450 can use =
2GB
RAM, the E250 only 1GB. The reason for this is that the E450 can use
256MB-DIMMS, while the E250 only uses 128MB-DIMMS. The fact is, you CAN
actually insert a 256MB-DIMM into a E250, but it will only see 128MB of
it... So, don't wonder if you just see the half of the inserted amount =
of
RAM.

Hi,

I have a script that pulls various files over onto a single machine for me
to read easily. The problem is that if a machine is down then the rsh
command that I use will stick for a long period before timing out. I
would like to cut this period down. I have seen versions of rsh that allow
a -t flag to be set to give a short time out period, bu tI can't find an
equivalent setting for the rsh. Is anybody aware of a way to shorten the
timeout period on rsh commands (preferably without messing up the rlogin
and other commands as well)?

Thanks to the many people who responded to this (way to many to mention).
They all suggest variants on using ping to determine if the host if up
before trying to rsh. Vic Engle was unique in pointing out that I could
also use nmap to make sure that the host would accept my rsh request as
well. As an example Cyril Jaouich sent this short outline of how to achieve
this with the bourne shell.
        #!/usr/bin/sh
