SUMMARY: Corrupt label, wrong magic number

It turned out the label of the disk was corrupt - hence the error!
After much deliberation and gathering all I could from those who replied
to my initial SOS (thank you!) and the web, I decided to run format and
then restore the backup label.  After a reboot, the filesystem was again
mountable and present by Veritas.
