Thanks to all who responded (a very long list). I wasn't clear in =
describing the problem. On boot up I would get the login screen, but on =
log in I only got a terminal window. This window was not resizable or =
movable. I could open new terminal windows. There was no background menu =
and no toolbar. The cause was network problems. So what I needed was the =
ability to log out of this state and log on to open windows or as another =
user without rebooting.=20

The following is what I ended up using ps -eaf|grep -i Xsession and then =
kill -9 <process-id> This brought me back to the login screen.

The command I was looking for is dtaction ExitSession. I tried this on a =
machine that was working and it came back with the confirmation dialog box =
which is what you see on a typical logout. Unfortunately, on the box with =
the problem it could not return the confirmation dialog box. I have looked =
to see if I could find where the confirmation dialog box is actually =
disabled (not just the GUI front end) and haven't found it yet.

There were a couple of other suggestions, but I didn't have time to try =
them.

Once again
Thanks
