ORIGINAL QUESTION: I just bought a Kingston 256MBytes upgrade for a Sun Ultra-1 machine. Since downtime for that machine should be the minimum possible, I'd like to know if I need special tools in order to disassemble the machine and install the modules inside. I already have "standard" tools and I'm familiar with hardware changes in other architectures. I'll summarize. ANSWERS: Sean Berry - berry@housebsd.org Rivera, Angel R - Angel.R.Rivera@conoco.com David Foster - foster@dim.ucsd.edu Mark Cohen - markc@neo.binaryfaith.com Jay Lessert - jayl@accelerant.net Larye Parkins - LParkins@niaid.nih.gov Ruddy, Robert - robertruddy@firstusa.com willief - willief@base-2.com UnixAdmin - sunixadm@yahoo.com Joseph Herpers - joeh@stsolutions.com Jeff Horwitz - jhorwitz75@yahoo.com Paul Wilkinson - Paul_Wilkinson@utsglobal.com "use a plan and simple Phillips screwdriver". "memconf" to visualize memory banks usage: http://www.webpak.net/~tschmidt/unix.html Service manual: http://docs.sun.com:80/ab2/coll.265.1/SS11SERVICE/@Ab2TocView?Ab2Lang=C&Ab2Enc=iso-8859-1 http://docs.sun.com/ab2/coll.265.1/U1CSERVICE/@Ab2PageView/5942?DwebQuery=ultra+OR+1&oqt=ultra+1&Ab2Lang=C&Ab2Enc=iso-8859-1 MY RESULT: Kingston sends instruction about the memory upgrade, but they don't cover the machine case. Most emails refer to a "phillips" screwdriver. I didn't know what a "phillips" screw was, so I use some "chewing gum" to get a "head model" of the screw, since I had no direct visual access to the machine rear part. In Spain such screws are called "star screw", by evident reasons ;-). Standard tool indeed :-). The upgrade process was simple and fast (<5 min).
