I could finally get this problem resolved. It is quite surprising that the problem was due to an NT server on the subnet which was trying to authenticate the rpc calls. Many people suggested the following: 1) To check the subnet mask of both the install client and install server 2) To check whether /export/install is shared properly 3) To check bootparams I have tried everything possible in vain. A mail in the sunmanagers archives gave me a clue to debug this and fix it. I have initially not believed this as there was no clue in the snoop output when the install client and server were connected to two different switches on the same subnet. But when I connected install client and server to a hub and tested, I could notice that an NT server was authenticating rpc replies with a following message: ntserver.abc.xyz.com -> test1.abc.xyz.com RPC R (#3332) XID=3553633865 Can't authenticate (client should begin new session) The following is what helped me identify and resolve this problem: <<can not mount root.htm>> Thanks to all who have taken their precious time to reply and Jeff for documenting his experience. Any client installation using the jumpstart fails with the following message. I am sure that I have configured /export/install and /export/jumpstart properly (mounted and shared). I have checked the mail archives which did not help me resolve this problem. I have tried snoop for the install client from install server as well as other hosts - but no clue. Could you let me know if you have any idea as to why this fails at the point given?
