Thanks for the overwhelming reply, so many of them to mention.

Many suggest IMP, http://www.horde.org, has a lot of features and
security in mind.
second best is SquirrelMail

I think I'll try IMP first.

Many suggest use https for secure connection and encryption of username
and password.
