Thanks to all who responded. I did have gcc installed. The problem was that there was another Makefile that needed to be modified to use gcc. This Makefile was in c50a/src/libdes directory. Ok...I still have a problem with the installation of Crack 5.0a. Although I did get a littler farther than before- see error messages below.
