Thanks All, Cron process exited for some reason and left the FIFO lock file behind, ( /etc/cron.d/FIFO) simply removing this and restarting cron via the binary (/usr/sbin/cron)or the rc script, it then ran fine. Also a lesson to me in the value of reading man pages !!! as i was told by so may of you !
