My thanks go to: David Foster Todd M. Wilkinson Jay Lessert Casper Dik John Phillips Crhistoper L.Barnard Darren Dunham The problem turned out to be that when I compiled ssh and created the packages, I did that on a Sun4u machine (64 bit). The machine I needed to run ssh is a Sun4m (32). - The problem wasnt permission related to sshd binary. - The problem wasnt missing any particular libraries or any package. - The problem is not that the sshd is a text file. I did use: file /usr/local/bin/sshd --------------------------------------------------- The original question: Dear Sun Managers, I want to use openssh on a machine that has a core cluster installation of Solaris 8 (versus a Solaris 8 machine that has the Entire Distribution plus OEM support cluster). The problem I have now is that when I run the openssh-3.0.2p1 daemon: /usr/local/sbin/sshd I get the following message: /usr/local/sbin/sshd sytax error at line 1: '(' unexpected This is how I installed openssh: - The following programs were installed on a Solaris 8 machine that has the Entire Distribution plus OEM support cluster. - Zlib- 1.1.3 - Openssl-0.9.6c - Prngd-0.9.23 - Openssh-3.0.2p1 - I created a package for each of the above programs using pkgmk - Pkgadd all of the above packages to another Solaris machine that has Entire Distribution plus OEM support cluster. Ran the /usr/local/sinb/sshd, things worked great. - Transferred those packages to a Solaris machine that has a core cluster (versus Entire Distribution plus OEM support cluster) and pkgadd all of the packages. Ran the /usr/local/sbin/sshd, and got the error message. - Added another package from Sun freeware site, libgcc-3.0.2-sol-8-sparc, but got the same error message again. I am not sure if I am missing any library file, If so, what are the SUNWxxx packages I need to install? Any idea where to look to solve this problem? Yahoo!
