I received many helpful answers. Some respondents indicated that I shouldn't have a problem running an X server even without any graphics hardware, but most responses fell into two categories: - Use xfvb A precompiled version is available from: ftp://ferret.wrc.noaa.gov/special_request/xvfb/solaris/ See also: http://ferret.wrc.noaa.gov/Ferret/FAQ/graphics/Solaris_Xvfb.html There is also a precompiled version available from the Oracle support Web site (MetaLink). This requires an account on the site to access the downloadable binary. Versions are available for Solaris 2.6, 7, and 8. - Use VNC Software can be downloaded from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ A couple of people indicated that xvfb is included in Solaris 9. Since our DBAs have access to the support section of the Oracle Web site, that's the solution I went with. Installation and configuration were quite straightforward.
