SUMMARY: Server upgrade recommendation

Hello all,
It appears that not so many people are using
E12K or do not have
time to contribute to the list. My thanks
goes to the following
people who helped:
Mike Myers:
...purchased 8 of the T3 systems and they
were about half of Sun's
quoted price to me. Not sure if you saw my
previous posting,
but I had questioned about the Gray Market.

Matt Harris:
I personally find T3's to be a pain in the
neck. Others disagree. Try
one and see for yourself - you *must*
configure each controller over the
network (each controller needs an ip address
and ethernet connection)
which I find silly, and in general their
performance has not stacked up
in the past. The new high-end Sun-branded
Hitachi arrays on the other
hand are wonderful (We have a 9000-series
here). I've also heard from
others that EMC's support is getting shabby
lately with cut-backs in
their support department due to the economy
as it is... Not sure on
this, but heard it from people I generally
trust. Other than that,
looks good. The 6800's are great hardware.

JESSE CARROLL:
The only question I see in you proposed
configuration is EMC. We had one
(Symetrix fibre channel) and found that it
was the slowest and most difficult
to manage of all the different storage
solutions we have. This includes Sun
A3500, A5200, and D1000's. We (finally) got
a Hitachi 9960 which blows EMC
away. MUCH faster (about 5X), easier to
maintain and configure, cheaper and is
sold by Sun (one vendor to call). If you
have an option use the Hitachi, don't
believe the EMC sales nonsense.

Vincent S. Cojot: In a separate posing, not
reply to my posting.
...There is 7U of space inside the cabinet and
above the F6800. The math with a 2U D240
Mediatray shows that only 3 fit in
there. Therefore, until SUN decides to sell
F6800's with 8U of space above
the server unit, we will limit ourselves to
3 domains per F6800. Thanks for
sharing your experiences.

Thank you all,
Vahid
