Solution to the problem turned out that the 880 was not set to 100, full. we had some extra characters around the "=" in the /etc/system file. The transfer speed is still asymmetric, but performance is much better. Below is the original email. > We have two servers that are exhibiting weird network problems. > > Our findings: > > traffic from db01 to app01 is slow (ftp around 6k/s) > traffic from app01 to db01 is fast (ftp around 10000k/s) > traffic to and from app01 and db01 from any other server is OK (ftp 2000 to 4000 k/S) > > The above numbers are backed up by other network applications, ftp just gives easy to read speed numbers. > > app01 and db01 are on the same switch and we have tried several ports to rule out hardware problems on the switch. > Both are set to 100 full and the switches show the same. > We are getting no errors on the interfaces or on the switch. > > db01 is a Sun V880 using the eri0 port, running Solaris 8 > app01 is a Sun E420R using the hme0 port, running Solaris 8 > > output from ifconfig is identical for the two (except for the ip address and port name) > > My only thought is that the 880 is overrunning the buffers on the 420 and it is thrashing the interface trying to slow it down. > > Anyone with any good ideas? > > Gordon Baldwin > Open Systems Adm.
