Thanks to all who replied: My problem was basic... when I logged into the system a user filled-up /tmp. The package commands failed with the errors below. The workd "memory" was the key. I had an open root session and managed to clean-up /tmp. The package commands worked again. I used ldd and check all the libraries and the sizes match on both machines. Any suggestions as to what is broken?
