Words cannot express the appreciation that needs to be given to the people on this list, from the admins who reply, to the web-site that store the archives. Thank you seems inadequate. Special thanks to: Kevin Buterbaugh [Kevin.Buterbaugh@lifeway.com] Steve Maher [steve@marzconsulting.com] Tony Urban [Tony.Urban@worldbook.com] Kevin Boykin [kboykin@neteng.com] Vberg Mats [mats.oberg@tietoenator.com] Melnik, David W [David.Melnik@stratech.com] Casper Dik [Casper.Dik@Sun.COM] (a god send to this list) Solution: (See question at end of mail) Sun replaced the board on the server. The collisions have stopped. Few things to note when changing the board: Need a new device tree. If it gives the following error: dev/dsk/c0t0d0s1: No such device or address The / file system (/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0) is being checked. Can't open /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0: CAN'T CHECK FILE SYSTEM. dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY boot with cdrom: boot cdrom -s mount the disk: mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /a moved path_to_inst: cd /a/etc ; mv path_to_inst path_to_inst.org boot -a: accept default and say yes to question boot -r: system should come up fine. Check and verify Things to try: (admin's replies) =================================== do a netstat -i also, you may wish to bring the interface down nad unplumb it ifconfig le0 down ifconfig le0 unplumb ifconfig le0 plumb then bring it back up ifconfig le0 inet <ipaddress> netmask <netmask> broadcast <broadcast address> le0 =================================== I test my Ultra 5 network ports with a crossover cat5 cable connecting hme0 to hme1 and run "test net" at the ok prompt. Obviously this requires two ethernet ports to work, and that you shut your system down to the ok prompt. I see this as a basic hardware test and it seems pretty thorough. Otherwise I would utilise the package SUNWvts, VTS is Sun's free validation test suite and we use that to test all of our hardware. There is a network section in the vts. You can find VTS on one of the supplement cd's of the media kit. Mine is on the "Software Supplement For the Solaris 8 Operating Environment", towards the bottom of the list is "SunVTS 4.0" =================================== Hi, youve probably allready heard this but the le-interface is 10mb half-duplex only, so collisions are a common thing. Add a hme-interface(or qfe) and run it in 100fdx and you should have no collisions. =================================== Evidently, ndd does not work with le. Sorry for misleading you. Please reference this previous sun manager's list posting: http://www.netsys.com/sunmgr/1999-07/msg00057.html In it, Casper Dik mentions that le0 only has one mode, 10Mbit HALF duplex. Make sure your switch has the same setting and I would expect your collision problems to cease. ===================================== ___________________________________________________ Kamalan Govender Computer and Network Services University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg Postal Address: Private Bag 3, WITS, 2050, South Africa Telephone: +27-(0)11-717-1671 Fax: +27-(0)11-339-1225 Web-site: www.wits.ac.za Disclaimer: The views in this email do not necessarily represent those of the University of the Witwatersrand -----Original Message----- From: sunmanagers-admin@sunmanagers.org [mailto:sunmanagers-admin@sunmanagers.org] On Behalf Of Kamalan Govender Sent: Wednesday, October 02, 2002 10:49 PM To: sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org Subject: Faulty network Card Hi all.
