Original Question: Is it possible to have console I/O directed to the rsc-console AND to ttya? I love the RSC for remote management, however, I'm not comfortable with disabling serial access in the event of a network outage, etc. The output-device and input-device parameters will accept multiple variables, however, I was under the impression that console access was an all or nothing type of thing. Note: The RSC's I am working with are the Sun Fire 280, 480, and 880 series NOT the E250 series. Solution: Using a Netra RJ45 to RJ45 console cable with a RJ45 to DB9 adapter, I was able to gain access to the RSC through the serial port ON THE RSC. This will allow my Data Center engineers to get on box using a Wintel laptop in the event of a network failure that prohibits access to the RSC via the Ethernet port. The only caveat to this solution is if the RSC itself has failed and the serial port itself in unresponsive. Note: The RJ45 - DB9 converter I used was straight through. FYI.. I get my Netra console cables from BayTech (my console server vendor). The BayTech part # is RJ08X-007-07. I believe this cable is nothing more than a Cisco console cable. The purpose of the RSC is to provide full remote console, where you can power down the host machine and power it back up again, just as if you were standing in front of the rack, which you can't do from a modem attached to ttya. -- Larye D.
