Thanks to all who responded. There still does not seem to be an easy method for going beyond 8 characters. Some people told me modify /etc/default/password, but my understanding is that this file only affects the minimum number of characters required for a password to be accepted by the OS. Another person mentioned PAM and porting it from Linux. I dont have time to port code from one OS to another. I was looking for a quicker solution. And as mentioned PAM is not used in all applications. My assumption is that npasswd will not do the trick. Thanks again.
