Hi,

I had a similar problem with my 2 new SUN FIRE V440 at the University, i
called SUN and it`s a known problem at SUN for these disks in these kind of
machines.

You have to installed these patches or firmware to fix these errors. It`s
work for me.

115662-01 Hardware/Firmware: LSI1030 U320 SCSI controller
116369-01 Hardware 36GB SCSI Disk Drive Patch : Download program and SCSI
Disk Drive firmware
115274-03 SunOS 5.8: /usr/sbin/raidctl patch
115275-02 SunOS 5.8: mpt driver patch
108974-37 SunOS 5.8: dada, uata, dad, sd, ssd and scsi drivers patch
115846-02 Hardware/PROM: Sun Fire V440 Flash PROM Update

After you have installed all that and reboot your machine, run iostat -En
and you should see Revision : PQ0B for the disk HITACHI and you should have
0 for Hard Errors:

Hope this help, good luck and have a nice day,

   9. Sun Fire V440 disk read/write errors (Iain Drummond)

My new Sun Fire V440 is showing unusually unstable behavior. I have been
setting it up and compiling a fair amount of opensource software and then
periodically running fsck to make sure all is well. each time fsck is run
there are alot of file system errors; more than I have ever experienced on
my Ultra5. The last time I ran fsck, several directories of recently
installed software were deleted; I presume errors were found in their
filesystems and fsck removed them. I have looked at the messages file in
/var/adm and find that the disks are showing read/write errors.

I need to decide 1) if these are serious, 2) if i need to rebuild from
scratch after disk reformatting, and 3) if the disks are faulty and (while
under warranty) need to be replaced.

I am also curious to know if local environmental factors can cause disk
instability like this. The V440 is temporarily on a shelf with a sun monitor
sitting on top of it and a power cord sitting next to it. Bad idea?

these are examples of the worrisome disk errors. i surmise from the serial
numbers that all 4 of the internal 36 GB disks are showing errors. I find it
hard to believe that Sun would ship 4 faulty disks.

thanks for any help
