Thanks to all who responded: Darren Dunham Mike Deborah Santumauro It seems that my soft partitions were created on the wrong disk slice (s2) and consequently sharing space with swap, thus causing the superblock corruption. I have since created a new slice and moved the offending soft partition onto it. Thanks again to everyone for their patience (esp Darren)).
