hi thanks everyone for the suggestions about rcp copying BUT it was even stranger than most of you thought. I got permission denied because inetd was started with a -s -t option, when i changed it in /etc/init.d/inetsvc to just start with the -s (no -t) it worked! V.strange but fun to figure out.
