Hello again, Thanks for the replies, though none of them close to solving the problem. My problem boiled down to multiuser login working fine yet in single user mode I could not login at all. Doing truss on login I stumbled upon the use of the 'pam_debug' file. Touching this file and rebooting yielded:- sf1(root)% INIT: New run level: S The system is coming down for administration. Please wait. Unmounting remote filesystems: done. Print services stopped. Killing user processes: done. I messed about with umpteen thing, eventually giving up. The whole reason for wanting single user mode was to install sun recommended patch list. I had no option and installed it while booted multiuser. Install went fine. After the upgrade I could boot and login single user no problem. Problem solved. PS. I spent ages trying to figure out this $ISA thingy. Where/how is it defined? I would expect it to be the arch name as returned by uname -p However the sub directory name is "sparcv9" yet "uname -p" returns "sparc".
