Well, thanks for the usual great responses, but that was an symptom of a larger problem. The message I pasted was, unfortunately, bogus. Our operator typed it incorrectly. There is no such thing as a 'uname -h' in Solaris............ The whole problem turned out to be a swap problem. The user we werw trying to log in was OK but the home direcory vanished. # ls -l /home total 0 But when tried to list the full pathname, the ls locked: # ls -l /home/troubleduser (...) Bad omen. Started to check the whole system. user@troubledhost # swap -l swapfile dev swaplo blocks free /dev/md/dsk/d40 85,40 16 3821408 1888272 /ora01/swapfile1 ?,? 16 4192224 2262176 Gess what? /ora01/swapfile1 was removed. The swapper was paging out to nowhere. Tried to remove the reference to the deleted file by swap -d, but the command refused to do so, because the file wasn4t there. The system eventually deadlocked. Fortunately enough, I removed the reference from the vfstab before the crash. The system is OK now. Tha machine is mostly funcional, but we can4t still log-in. Im my perception, the following message we get when a console is attached, is the key: INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly. Check for possible errors. id: co "/usr/lib/saf/ttymon -g -h -p " 'uname -h ' console login: " -T sun -d /dev/console -l console -m ldterm, ttcombat" Any insights? Couldn4t find anything meaningful in google and sunsolve. Thanks in advance, Filipe -----Original Message----- From: Filipe Litaiff Sent: Wednesday, March 17, 2004 10:01 AM To: sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org Subject: Cheap Thrills: an E4500 doesn4t respont Hi fellow forumers, We have an E4500 wich we can4t login. It seems to autenthicate but we never get the prompt: " Escape character is '^]'. SunOS 5.9 login: bogususer Password: Login incorrect login: validuser Password: " If the login is valid, it autenthicates an locks. Same happens to ssh: " hostorig # ssh validuser@hostdest validuser@hostdest's password: " Locks again. Wen we try to connect the console: " INIT: Command is respawning too rapidly. Check for possible errors. id: co "/usr/lib/saf/ttymon -g -h -p " 'uname -h ' console login: " -T sun -d /dev/console -l console -m ldterm, ttcombat" " Net services are functional, AFAIK. "rpcinfo -p troubledhost" responds soundly. Any ideas???? What are the chances that a reboot solves the problem? Thanks, and needless to say, it is very urgent.
