Thanks to Jim VandeVegt and others. Paul suggested crtl-j (and crtl-q to fix andy crtl-s), which is what I needed as my returns where just appearing as crtl-m on the command line. So I did, in semi-darkness, after a few crtl-j, followed by: /usr/bin/stty sane crtl-j /usr/ucb/reset crtl-j which got me something working (so I tried it a few more times), but it seemed that the locale was funny. Logging out and in didnt fix it so I did a quick reboot. Console fixed - we will call that 4 points to Jim. How to return the system such that a break from the console does a halt is still open but not urgent - Ill send another summary if people answer this one before I find it myself.
