ok, embarassing. Since State & Federal in U.S. practically shut down for mourning (pretend it's all for Ray Charles -- that's a real cultural loss), I took the opportunity to come in early and take down the server. pulled it out, went through it all again, examined the CD out of the machine and connected it, then disconnected it, put it all back in and reconnected it. Turns out I hadn't been quite forcefull enough seating the CD into the connection card. There is no separate power connector. It all comes though the ribbon cable and the connection card. Did a "touch /reconfigure" before shutting down, so when I started it back up that would be all set. Got lights during startup as it was tested. Pushed the button, got lights, and it popped out. Pushed it back in, got lights. So, I think I'm all set. Thanks to Chad Johnson, Tyler & Barray Deevey for information and encouragement. I have seen this exact same symptom from the ribbon cable inserted upside down.. Cables are generally keyed in one of two ways. Either a small section raised in the middle of the connector or a plug in one of the holes in the connector. raised: ___________--_________ |0000000000000000000000| |_0000000000000000000000_| plugged: ______________________ |0000000000X00000000000| |_0000000000000000000000|_ I would suspect that if you had a 'kit' the cable would be bent correctly and it is most likely keyed. -------- Original Answer -------- Subject: RE: adding CD drive to Netra T1 - 105 Date: Wed, 09 Jun 2004 09:47:12 -0700 From: Admin@Thile <admin@thile.com> To: 'Chris Hoogendyk' <choogend@library.umass.edu> First thing I would try... From the "OK" prompt type: probe-ide Did it show the CD Rom? If it did not show up power off the machine and try to reseat the Cable to mother board and the paddleboard to the CD Rom, then Try it again. Tyler -------- Original Question -------- Subject: adding CD drive to Netra T1 - 105 Date: Wed, 09 Jun 2004 10:56:44 -0400 From: Chris Hoogendyk <choogend@library.umass.edu> To: Sun Managers <sunmanagers@sunmanagers.org> seems dirt simple. doesn't show up. I have a Netra T1 105 that only had one 18G Drive. In order to have better backup and recovery capability, I got a second 18G drive for mirroring and a CD drive for recovery (both from Sun). Printed out the Netra T1 User and Administration Guide from Sun's online documentation. Read it. So, then I scheduled an early morning shutdown, took it out of the rack, popped the cover. No PCI card, so it was relatively easy. Insert the connector card, connect it to the slot on the mother board, pop the blanking panel, insert the CD drive and push it onto the connector on the connector card, insert the new 18G drive, put cover and bezel back on, back into rack, do a reconfigure reboot. Did everything with an anti-static wrist strap (except the reboot ;-) Format shows me the new 18G drive. Been there. Done that. All set. The CD drive, however, has no light, and if I push the button on the front to eject, nothing happens. Does it seem like I didn't do the install properly? Or is there something I need to do that I haven't? Or might the drive be faulty? Can I figure it out without taking the server down again and just trying to re-seat connections? /var/adm/messages for the reboot is at the bottom of this message.
