Hello, Firstly, thanks for all the replies. The consensus is: 1. The tty user listed as a member of the tty group is a known Solaris 8 bug. It wasn't causing a problem, but I've changed tty::7:root,tty,adm to tty::7:root,adm with to keep folks quiet. 2. The staff and sysadmin groups do have specific purposes (eg. the sysadmin group controls who can use admintool). Removing them is a bad idea which may well break things, either now or later. They're staying on my system.
