SUMMARY: just curious: Telnet login and Solaris 8 message "are my patch clusters installed?"

Answers:

Many suggested that my patch cluster was out of date.
This wasn't the case as I have installed many patch clusters on this server.

Now unless my patch clusters (Sol recommended) never had kernel patches then I
could see the reason for the message,
as some suggested it was in reference to my Kernel patch.
Perhaps I have never installed a patch cluster that would update my motd. I
don't know.

Many said it was ok and it referenced my OS release of 12/02. ***I like this
one, makes me feel all good***

I learned that the message comes from /etc/motd

Perhaps this message from Ric (one of the many that responded) explains it
best.

I asked Ric to check his motd and then asked him if he had installed patch
clusters since that date, which he had.

"Yes, which shoots my theory as to when it changes.  In looking thru old md5
reports, it appears Sun stopped placing the "uname -v" output in the motd
file around 2000, since that's the last time that file's md5 checksum
changed across a patch cluster.

Looks like the file comes from package SUNWcsr at install time, and my
motd is from the Solaris 8 2/02 CDs.  Installing from he 2/04 pressing of
Solaris 8 creates a /etc/motd that reads
Sun Microsystems Inc.   SunOS 5.8       Generic Patch   February 2004

So I'm guessing the Solaris 8 media used to build your system was somewhere
in between the two sets I have?"
