Folks - Apparently using http://www.comsmiths.com.au/pam/v1.05/ is the best bet for this. I tried to port pam_tally to Solaris 9, but absent a system fully outfitted with all of the GNU extras, I was not successful. I've actually got a custom solution working (I had to revise what I had previously), but I know of others who are running this Computer Smiths option successfully. Thanks to Mike Newton for the link.
