dd worked a treat for me. (dd if=/dev/zero of=/path/to/file count=50000)
or words to that effect

Can anyone give me a command to create and write a large file to a new
filesystem, I have limited space in / so have added a large SAN drive, I
want to test the performance but can't just copy as I have nothing of
suitable size.
