| We've been running dBase IV (version 1.1) for Unix on our Suns (SunOS 4.1.1)
| under OW2 with no problems. However, under OW3 dbase promptly crashes with
| a segmentation fault.
|
| Also, if I try to run "binder -network" on my server I get
|
| Error Initializing Classing Engine Database - Error no: 1.
|
| and the file /usr/openwin/lib/cetables/cetables is removed (which causes
| lots of problems). Sun software support claims it is a bug (agreed!) which
| will be fixed in the next version. However, that seems to leave you with now
| way of globally setting the default file bindings and the support tech didn't
| sound real sure of himself so I thought I'd ask here. The bindings in
| /etc/filetype seem to be ignored under OW3.
|
| BTW, the Answerbook seems to be pretty vague and devoid of useful info when
| it comes to the topic of the binder and classing engines.
|
| If anyone can shed some light on these problems, it would be appreciated.
|
| thanks in advance,
|

Yes, the binder seems to have real problems with the network ce database eh?
It is just barely useable with the user ce database too. Once you know where
all the land mines are (and there are a lot!) you learn to step over them.
I have found that if you convert the network database into a user database,
change it with the binder and then convert it back into a network database
it will work.
There is a utility for turning the ce databases back and forth from
ASCII to binary called ce_db_build. You can use it to convert a user ce
database into a network or system database. This was in the manual pages
but it is well hidden. The pages for both ce_db_build and the companion
ce_db_merge are in $OPENWINHOME/man/man1 in ASCII not nroff! Therefore they
don't show up in the whatis database for "man -k" to find them.
Typing man ce_db_build will give you a screwey man page so you may want to
use "more" on $OPENWINHOME/man/man1/ce_db_merge.1
Good luck!

The dbase IV problem is a known bug. If you call Borland, they will
give you a diskette with a new pctool.

No! there *is* a patch for binder to fix these problems, keep after
Sun to give it to you. We had to be very persistant to get this
patch, demand the service you pay for! I really hate the fob off "in
the next version" for problems as big and bad as this one.
