My problems were related to the sendmail.cf, as I believed, and also to the way I started the sendmail.mx. In fact, I started it as:
/usr/lib/sendmail.mx -bd ...etc
this caused the strange behaviour of the daemon. The correct steps to do are:
1) rename sendmail.mx as sendmail
2) run the daemon
About the sendmail.cf, I forgot to comment out the following rule in the
ruleset zero section:
# Replace following with above to only forward "known" top-level domains
#R$*<@$*.$+>$* $#$M $@$R $:$1<@$2.$3>$4 user@any.domain
and to use instead the following:
# if you are on the DDN, then comment-out both of the the lines above
# and use the following instead:
R$*<@$*.$+>$* $#ddn $@ $2.$3 $:$1<@$2.$3>$4 user@any.domain
