Subject: X windows crashing on X terminal

I'm running xdm out of the box on a sparc10 and an NCD terminal (modem
19c or something like that) running xdm from it. I use the standard
xdm-config and the user runs openwindows. After logging in, he uses it
for a few minutes and after a random number of minutes, all windows die
at the same time and he gets the login prompt again.
Also, sometimes when he logs in, he doesn't get his windows but instead
gets an xdm login prompt with the welcome banner replaced with "This is
an insecure session".
What's wrong?

Doris Harrington suggested running
openwin -noauth -defeateventsecurity
Tanya Herlick said that this happened to her when xdm fired twice.
She and Birger Wathne reminded me I should comment out
:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X
from the /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers file, which I already had.
John W. Cieply reminded me to check .xsession-error.
In my case, I believe I was running two xdm's. I fixed this but now I
fid that xdm dies from time to time, and I'd like to know why and what
I can do about it.
