As promised, here's the summary post for my questions.

No direct answers to this one, but someone at SunSoft wrote to say that
a patch is in the works to add a PMI file for the Trident 8900 (B and C)
running at 1024x768 with 256 colors at a 60 Hz refresh rate.

The manuals were no help on this, but I finally discovered a file
/etc/openwin/share/etc/OWconfig which stores the path of the .pmi file
and other OW config information. By editing that, I was able to try a
number of different settings with no success, other than to have different
odd things happen to my screen.
