SUMMARY: ethernet discovery

==================== Original Post ================================

A while back I came across something that would search the ethernet and
pull back all the ethernet address that were on the wire. This info
could then be saved in the ethers file.

Needless to say I cannot for the life of me remember what this
utility/program is. I am pretty certain it was something I pulled off
the Net.

Does anyone have any idea what the name of this program is and if so
could you tell me what it is ?

=====================================================================

Well as usual an overwhelming response.

Sought after answer:
====================

 The program that I was looking for was getethers. This can actully be
 found as part of a package called etherman.

 archie returns:

 gatekeeper.dec.com for both getethers and etherman in
 /.b/usenet/comp.sources.unix/volume26
 /.b/usenet/comp.sources.unix/volume25

Other Solutions:
================

1) ping -s <broadcast address>
     arp -a

     The arp -a command simply dumps the contents of the arp table which
     includes the ethernet addresses associated with IP addresses. The ping
     is necessary to populate the table with the addresses of the nodes you
     are interested in.

2) Program called etherhostprobe - archie returns pith.uoregon.edu in
    /pub/Sun4/bin
    I haven't checked this out, but for what its worth the example output
    provided by Ian Chisolm seems to be what I am afer.

3) Interman, packman, pr.
    I haven't checked these out either but again on gatekeeper.dec.com
    in the directories specified above

4) Etherfind - part of SunOS, but not what I am looking for. This is
    basically a traffic monitor.
