Hi,
It turns out there is a hard coded limit of 16 groups per user which can NOT be
changed even though there is a variable NGROUPS in /usr/include/sys/param.h.
As Alan Dettrick explained:

Hi people,
SunOs 4.1.X running NIS.
Is there a limit to the number of groups a user may be defined in ?
I am getting strange error messages when running 'make' and the problem is
solved when a user is removed from one of the groups.
The error message is:
