The answer came pretty much from all of the following:

- Install Jumbo tty patch 100513-4
- Set getty to highest std getty allowed. I used std.38400
- Set up a /etc/remote line for the cua? device and make the baud
rate the same as the getty (38400)
- Use tip to connect to the modem at 38400 baud
- Set AT&D2 &C1 &W1 s0=1 and then the real key is AT&W
When the AT&W is issued, it not only stores the settings to
memory on the modem, but it also !!!!LOCKS!!!! the DTE speed to 38400 baud
between the computer and the modem. Now the modem stays communicating
to the computer at 38400, but allows the modem to negotiate the
fastest speed it can with the incoming modem. Sounds simple enough
doesn't it.
Just make sure some bone head does not use kermit or the like
at your site and re-issue the at&w command while connected to the
modem at a lower rate (ie: 9600 baud or below).
Anyway, hope this helps others as well. This seems to work with the
ZOOM 28.8, 14.4 and Hayes 14.4 modems.

David,
I think the problem is the DTE interface speed, the speed between the
modem and sun. When you set the getty to 19200, effectively you are setting
the DTE speed on the sun to 19200. Some of these cheapie modems do not offer
independant speed control for modem to modem and modem to Sun (DTE)
communication. In other words, When you connect to another modem at 14400,
it also tries to talk to the Sun at 14400 baud which is a speed mismatch
and thats why you see garbage ...
Check your modem documentation and see if you have a register for something
like "DTE Interface Speed" and set it to the same speed that you have
the getty set to on the Sun ( 19200 ). Otherwise, you're "stuck" at 9600 baud.

That's pretty much it. Our higher speed modems are running off a
SCSI terminal server. There are some patches that will help.

There are few modems that do this, you have to get the DTE side of the modem to lock at the getty speed for ever.
What is happening is the getty will send a "AT" from your key board and the modem see the "AT" and sets the modem DTE to 19.2kb no problem. When a call comes in the the modem trains up to 14.4 and the DTE is also set to 14.4 but the getty is 19.2, you get crap. you must set the DTE of the modem to the same speed as the getty and lock it there and let the modem do the speed conversion weather it is 1200 -> 19200 or 14.4 -> 19.2.
My modems are all locked at 115.2kb or 38.4kb depending on the system. I call in to them from around the world and have know problem with any baud rate modem. I have made connections from 1200 though to what Telebit calls "Fast" which can be up to 70kb for the WorldBlazer.
I have never been able to get the auto-baud getty to work on a Sun. I have not even looked to see if it is still there(last looked at it 5 years ago) if it is there the getty dose not support 14.4 or 28.8kb. The getty only supports 110, 134, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, and 38400 baud you must pick one and lock you DTE speed of the modem to that. just looking at the "/etc/gettytab" there still is a Dial type of auto-baud getty but again there are only the speed above available if you modify gettytab. You must send Breaks to the getty to get it to change speeds.

Does your PC have a 16550 UART in it ? If it doesn't it will not be able to connect at higher than 9600 baud.

Dave,
Here are two things to check.
Does the Zoom modem autobaud or must you specify a rate? Perhaps the link between the SUN and the Zoom is locked at 9600 by the modem. Try dialing out from the SUN using "tip" and setting the modem for 19200 and storing it in its permanent setup.
This is the ugly one. I'm not familiar with 4/280's but I run a 4/690. There are ALM setup parameters in the kernel reconfiguration. They are IMPOSSIBLE to understand since they use a hex bit masking scheme. Anyway, they may be locking the ALM port at 9600. Check it out.
Good Luck

You need full modem support on the lines, and only the first three (maybe four) lines on the ALM board support modems. Check the Sun docs for this product and how to rebuild a kernel so that modem support on the pins is enabled.

You neglect to say how you are configuring, if you are using the split serial line /dev/ttya and /dev/cua0 trick or what. Zoom, of course, is useless. They have one employee who understands UNIX, and he is not in tech support.
Make sure you have the jumbo tty patch, I believe 100513-4 for that OS. This will fix many problems with Sun's serial drivers, including supporting hardware flow control, rts/cts. This is the default behavior for Zoom modems, and your machine may be be too slow to handle higher baud rates without flow control.
The other thing to check is your parity and bits: if some pinhead has re-configured your 19200 or higher connections for getty, you may not get the even-7bits-1stopbit behavior you expect.
