Thanks a lot for all the replies here goes the solution followed
by the original question.
I was using the fully qualified nis domain names in the hostname fields
of the entries in the netgroup member fields, as the workstations were
in a different domain and did not have entries in the local nis+ maps,
I was getting access denied. Changing the hostname to fully qualified DNS
domainnames solved my problem. I found that entries in the domainname field
of the member field did not help, I had to enter the fully qualified DNS
domain names in the hostname field.
So changing the netgroup to
group1 (workstation1.DNS.name,,)
from the earlier entry of
group1 (workstation1.NIS.name,,)
solved my problem
