The answers I got point me to the right direction, here is how I did it,
I need automount to read the auto_master or auto.master file on the client.
This is /etc/auto_master on a Solaris client
/- auto_direct_hal -nosuid
This is /etc/auto.master on a Ultrix client
/- auto.direct.ultrix -intr,nosuid
This let automount to read auto_direct_hal and auto.direct.ultrix from a NIS
map.
On the Ultrix client I start automount with this option,
/usr/etc/automount -m -f /etc/auto.master; echo -n 'automount ' > /dev/console
-m means don't read NIS auto.master
-f means first read local file...
Then I create auto_direct_hal and auto.direct.ultrix NIS maps on the NIS server.
This works great.
