We are running motif so we went with XV....

My personal choice is a nice little program called xwpick. It lets you
grab in all kinds of formats (including ps, eps, epsi, gif, pcx, pict and
ppm).
A quick grab from the README file:
xwpick lets you pick an image from an arbitrary window or rectangular
area of an X11-server and write it to a file in a variety of formats.
I think it can be found at asis01.cern.ch, otherwise look for it with
archie.

"xsnap" is good for this - it allows any size of snapshot, in
greyscale or color.
It's a public-domain program - I can send you the SunOS 4.1.3 binary if
you want - it's ~= 200k bytes compressed & uuencoded.

Try xv's grab facility , you can save as giff, tiff, postscript, pbm, X11 and
JPEG.
It'll do colour, greyscale, dithered and reduced colour. Version 2 is freeware
3 is shareware.
