I recieved one reply and it was from Thomas Reynolds <treynol@orion.it.luc.edu>
who stated that he had no experience with servers, but that an upgrade went
just fine on a SS5 running Solaris 2.4 with no NIS or NIS+ responsibilities.
I went ahead and upgraded the machine and everything went fine. All of my
NIS+ information was preserved and it generally went off without a hitch.
That was the upgrade. I then tried to move in an Ultra 1 to replace the
SS20 and since they are different architectures, things got a little hairy.
Basically you have to remember to transfer all of the config files without
transferring any of the kernel or /dev files. This gets a little tricky
in the /etc directory, but overall I think it went well. I was able to keep
all of my NIS+ tables throughout the whole transfer and even got my credentials
back after I remembered the /etc/.rootkey file!
Basically, if you want to upgrade the OS of a machine, no problem. If you are
upgrading in preparation for a swap out of machines (up to an Ultra), don't
bother. All of the config files are the same anyway.
